Theresa Hutcheson Floyd

Theresa Vaneata Hutcheson Floyd, age 91, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday, April 2, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 7, 1932, in DeFuniak Springs, FL to parents Ida Nichols Hutcheson and Van Hutcheson.

Her marriage to Cecil J. Floyd on May 16, 1949 began a beautiful seventy-two year adventure that brought about her proudest accomplishment, her children: sons Greg and Rusty and daughters Sherry and Holly.

For several years she juggled being a mother and managing the office at the family-owned mechanical contracting company.   Her steadfast devotion to motherhood was not only saved for her children.  She treated all of her children’s friends, her nieces and nephews, and even employees as her own - welcoming them into her home, providing love and comfort, and acting as a second mother to many.

In addition to her fierce love for her family, she was also a true animal enthusiast.  Her house was always filled with happy, content pets, all overweight as they enjoyed a steady diet of leftovers from her kitchen.

Preparing food for family and friends was her truest expression of love.  Her Southern cooking could not be beat, and those lucky enough to enjoy it always joked that she could take flour and bacon grease and magically create an amazing meal.   She treasured teaching her techniques and secrets to anyone willing to join her in the kitchen.

Theresa valued and appreciated her beautiful home and found great pleasure in working in the yard.  Hydrangeas, azaleas, citrus trees… everything she would poke into the ground seemed to flourish.   She was always happy to have visitors, and, throughout her life, she welcomed everyone with a treat of something good to eat and a cup of freshly made coffee.

An accomplished artist, the beautiful paintings and sculptures she created for the family will always be cherished.   She loved to fish and she enjoyed the outdoors.  Reminiscing with family and friends was a favorite way to spend time together, and she had the most remarkable memory for details in her entertaining stories.  She was always ready to engage in a card or dice game, or take off on a quick trip to the casino.  And she was the MOST fun person in the room.  She told great jokes, she loved hearing great jokes, and she always laughed with abandon.  Her infectious smile and her boundless spirit brought joy to all those around her.

She’ll be remembered as a strong, beautiful woman.  As a loving wife, a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  As a caring and compassionate friend.   And as an intelligent, joyful soul who knew how to enjoy life.

She is survived by her son Gregory A. Floyd and wife Charotte Griner Floyd, her daughter Holly M. Floyd Shipman and husband Gary A. Shipman, son-in-law Lyle Sandquist, grandsons Chris Floyd, Zack Floyd (Chaela), Joseph Floyd (Savanah), granddaughters Tess Floyd Taylor and Danielle Floyd, great-grandchildren Kaelyn, Carson, Ethan, Payton, Cooper, Blake, Allison, Reese and Elizabeth and many nieces and nephews.   She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cecil J. Floyd, daughter Sherry S. Floyd Sandquist, son Russell S. Floyd, daughter-in-law Donna Crim Floyd, and brother Sidney A. Hutcheson.

She will be greatly missed by all those who had the honor to know her.
