SMSGT Ronald Lee Johnson, age 57 of Choctaw Beach passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2019 in 96th Medical Group, Eglin AFB Hospital, Eglin AFB, Florida. He was born February 11, 1962 in Landstuhl, Germany, the son of Donald Lee Johnson and Renata Ida Kieser Johnson. He moved to the United States when he was one and a half years old. Ron graduated from Freeport High School with the Class of 1980 at which time he immediately joined the United States Air Force. Two years later he married Carol Ruth Evans and she followed him to every duty station allowed in his near 27 year military career. After retirement from the Air Force Ron became employed with OCI in Crestview where he worked an additional ten years as a correctional officer. An avid outdoorsman Ron loved to hunt and fish and loved kayaking. When indoors he watched sports and loved to read, mostly non fiction especially about the Crisis in Viet Nam. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of the 96th Medical Group for the love and care extended Ron during his hospital stay.
Ron is survived by his wife Ruth Johnson, his daughter Amanda Johnson, his mother, Renata Johnson, his brothers Bill Johnson and Mike Johnson and wife Anita and his sister, Marie Craft and husband Jeff. Nieces and nephews and his long time trusted friend and loyal companion, Rocky, his spoiled Corgi also survive.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in SMSG Ronald Lee Johnson’s memory to the American Cancer Society, pre-addressed envelopes will be furnished at the visitation and funeral service. A time of visitation will be Saturday, July 20, 2019 from 1 until 2 P.M. in Choctaw Beach Methodist Church, 479 Live Oak Street, Freeport, Florida 32439 with the funeral beginning at 2 P.M. in the church with Pastors Lew Wilder and Don McManus officiating. Full military honors will follow the funeral service concluding with a reception at Choctaw Community Center, 126 Water Oak Street, Choctaw Beach, Florida.
