Ruth Marie Bjorkman, age 80, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the family residence. She was born November 13, 1930 in DeWitt, Arkansas, the daughter of Vernon Wesley and Clara Jaunita Spears. Ruth worked in the MWR division of the Administration Department on the Yorktown, Virginia Naval Weapons Station. She began there in 1968 as a Stock Control Clerk and through her love of people, much work and schooling, she retired as a Recreation Manager Specialist in the Special Services Office. Ruth and her husband Edward came to DeFuniak Springs in 1985. She enjoyed membership in many local clubs and service organizations in her “new hometown”. Through the Guardian Ad Litem Program Ruth served many children as a court appointed special advocate. Her greatest love was of her family of whom she was very proud and she enjoyed sharing photographs and stories about them. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of DeFuniak Springs.
Among survivors are her husband, Edward Gordon Bjorkman. Her daughter Carole Ann Richards and her son Edward Garrett Bjorkman. Her brother Ben Spears and nephew Steven Spears. Grand daughters, Amy Milanese and Erin Ray, four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren also survive.
Services will be held Saturday, October 29, 2011 in Jerry Evans Chapel at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Michael Moore officiating. Private interment will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
