DeFuniak Springs

Roland Quentin Griffith passed away on December 29, 2024 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Roland was born on May 10, 1931 in Samson, Alabama to parents James Malcolm and Alice Ray Griffith. With his childhood in Gaskin, he attended Gaskin Elementary and graduated from Walton High School. A career in civil service then afforded him the opportunity to call Germany and Turkey home before returning to DeFuniak Springs after retirement. Several years ago Roland and Ouida moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to be with his daughter and her family.

Roland proudly served in the Florida National Guard for 33 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in DeFuniak Springs, Glendale Masonic Lodge 225 F & A M, and Elks Lodge 946 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

When Roland and his wife returned to DeFuniak Springs after his retirement, he was delighted to personally construct their dream home. With a 70-year marriage, Roland was unwaveringly devoted to Ouida, and he was a wonderful father and leader of their family. He set an honorable example for his children to follow as he was humble, unassuming, and kind to everyone he met. He never raised his voice in anger nor spoke ill words of anyone. He loved his family fiercely and was always excited about family reunions and get togethers.

Roland was a talented handyman. Instead of replacing things, he was usually successful at repairing them. Very methodical in everything he did, he was also meticulous. When he wasn’t repairing or building, Roland enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, playing bridge, and cooking for his family.

Roland is survived by his son, Rod Griffith, his daughter, Rhonda Heineman (Tony), and sister in law Vonette Griffith. He also leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren – Cara Griffith (Jason Levit), Sara Williams (Wes), Alison Heineman, Heid Ray Stevenson (Jordan) and great-grandchildren – Philip Williams, Julia Williams, Mae Clay, Murphy Marshall, and Bowen Marshall.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ouida Griffith, parents Malcolm and Alice Griffith, brothers James (Tip), Royce (Poochie), John and Howard, sisters Bertha Mitchell, Eunice Conwill, Elsie Nobles, Hilda McCall, and Hilda’s infant twin sister.

Those who were blessed to know Roland will remember him as one of the best men they knew. He loved the Lord and witnessed for Him by actions and how he treated others.

The family would appreciate donations made to Glendale Masonic Lodge #225.
