Mr. Richard Cleveland Schofield, age 72 of Gaskin passed away early Thursday morning, September 27, 2018 at the family residence surrounded by his family. He was born April 5, 1946 in Gaskin, the son of Benjamin and Annie Ruth Mathews Schofield. After attending school and helping on the family farm he served his country in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Germany during the Viet Nam War. Richard came home after his military service ended and made his home in the Gaskin Community where he enjoyed nature and the great outdoors. He was happiest from dawn to dusk when he could spend all of his time outdoors tending his tractor and his ponds. He had been employed with First American Farms for a number of years but after retirement loved piddlin” on the farm with his best friend and companion “Spice”, his dog, which incidentally saved Richard’s life on one occasion by taking a bite from a venomous snake. He is predeceased by his brothers, Horace, Don, Willard and Lester and his grand daughter Zoey.
Among survivors are his children, Jill Sykes and husband Stephen. Tim Schofield, Rita Schofield, Vickie Schofield and companion Reuben. His grandchildren, Megan, Chelsea, Rebecca, Austin and Keith. Six great grandchildren; his brothers, Clifford and wife Peggy, David and wife Brenda, Dan, Freddie and wife Roberta. His sisters-in-law, Paula, Joan, Diane and Syvlia and the mother of his children, Vonceil Schofield also survives.
The family expresses tremendous gratitude to his caregiver, Mary Lancaster of Regency Hospice for her care and compassion. Richard had prearranged his final wishes among which were that he would be cremated and scattered, on a calm day, over his farm which he dearly loved.
