Mirta Abu-Gharbiya

June 21, 1934 — March 14, 2025

Seacrest Beach

Mirta was born in Havana, Cuba, on June 21st, 1934. After attending college at the University of Havana, she immigrated to the United States in the late 1950s. She raised her family in Miami, Florida and then spent time in Los Angeles, California, before moving to Texas to live by her daughter and help raise her grandchildren. In recent years, Mirta relocated to Seacrest with her son-in-law and daughters, where she loved spending her days enjoying the beach, going on adventures, and doing her puzzles and diamond art.

Mirta, lovingly known as Titi, or Mami, or Tata, was adored by everyone who met her. A rousing mixture of both sweet and sassy, she never hesitated to let you know what she thought, yet she would also never hesitate to give you the shirt off her back. She would often say “Nothing is a problem,” and she wholeheartedly exemplified this no matter what came her way. Her legacy of love solidly resonates through her family and friends.

Mirta is survived by her two daughters, Samira Baker and Gisselle Barnhart; Gisselle’s husband, Alan Barnhart; her grandchildren, Chris Lyons and Matthew Miranda; Chris’ wife Bethany Lyons; many nieces and nephews; and a whole host of other family and friends who cared for her deeply and were sincerely loved in return.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Nicolás and Esther Sosa, her husband, Muhammad Abu-Gharbiya, her siblings, Elia Gonzalez, Nicolás Sosa, Benjamín Sosa, Aleida Gomez, and Elda Quintana.

There will be a private family burial held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers or donations, cards and condolences to the family are much appreciated.
