Mrs. Minnie Lee Carroll Melvin, age 95 of Darlington passed away early Sunday, October 11, 2009 in a Geneva, Alabama healthcare facility. She was born April 14, 1914 in Darlington the daughter of Columbus Olman “Lum” Smith and Ella Jane Spears Smith. A life-long resident of Darlington Minnie Lee attended Darlington School. For many years she was employed with Franklin Ferguson in Florala. After her husband Richard Carroll passed away in 1984 she married James Melvin. After retirment she loved to fish and garden and was a noted expert at cooking turnips and collard that she grew herself. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Darlington. She is predeceased by her husbands, a daughter Lummie Lou, her brothers Sam, Barney and Nathan and her sisters Laney and Fannie Belle.
Among survivors are her daughter Jean Robinson and husband Jerry of Panama City. Her son Billy Carroll and wife Bea of Darlington. Her brothers Walter Smith and wife Carlita and R. D. Smith and wife Ella; her sister Edna McCormack all of Darlington. Her grand daughters, Teresa Gooding, Dianne Robinson, Paula Kethcem and Susan Funkhouser. Six great grandchildren also survive.
Floral arrangements are being accepted. A time of visitiation will be one hour prior to funeral time. Funeral services will be Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel with Reverend Terry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Limestone Cemetery.
