Mr. Luther “Mel” Chaney, age 71 of DeFuniak Springs passed away late Saturday night
June 27, 2015 in North Okaloosa Medical Center. He was born December 9, 1943 in
Chicago, Illinois the son of Luther Melvin Chaney, Sr. and Ersa Lee Strong Chaney. After
attending public school in Chicago, Mel joined the United States Army where he served
his country some twenty one years in tours of duty in Viet Nam and Korea. He retired
from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. After retiring from military service he and
his wife lived in Pinellas County where he worked with the county as computer technician.
He and his wife purchased a motor home and travelled the United States from 1998 until 2002.
In their travels, they were drawn to DeFuniak Springs, loved the area, bought property and
settled here. Mel loved model planes and was a member of the Crestview Modelers Association. He had a fascination for motor cycles and owned a trike which he enjoyed
riding on the roadways of Walton County. Mel was Roman Catholic by faith.
Among survivors are his wife Susan. His daughter Toni Segler and husband Herman. His
Grandson Austin and his Granddaughter Chaney. His sister Kat Tanza and husband Ed and
His brothers-in-law, Thomas Mackiewicz and wife Mary Beth and Richard Mackiewicz andwife Connie also survive.
The family will receive friends in Christ the King Catholic Church, 16250 U. S, Highway 331 South, Freeport, Florida Thursday, July 2, 2015 from 9 A.M. until 10 A.M. with the service beginning at 10 A.M. in the church. Interment will be in Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Florida.
