Biography


Mr. Lee Roy Holden, age 84 of DeFuniak Springs passed away Sunday evening, October 9, 2011 in Healthmark Regional Medical Center. He was born November 28, 1926 in Central, South Carolina the son of Isaac J. and Lillie Mable Head Holden. As a boy of 7 or 8 years old his first job was carrying in wood for people for five cents. His first real job was in a lumber yard. He walked two miles to the lumber year at 8 A.M. and at noon would walk the two miles back home for lunch, then make the trek back to the lumber yard to finish out the day at 38 and one have cents an hour. A pencil cost one cent. In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army in Fort Brag, Nor th Carolina. In 1948 he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Langley. In 1949 he married Elvera Reyes. He was stationed in Germany during World War II and later served in the Korean Conflict and the Viet Nam Crisis. He retired in 1966 and moved to Florida and worked civil service on Eglin Air Force Base for some 20 years retiring in 1987, He loved ranching and spent his retirement years with his wife on their ranch. He is predeceased by his wife, Vera and a daughter-in-law Susan Ann Jones Holden. His brothers and sisters, Arvel, Fred, Clyde, Homer, Bill, Florence and Cornelas.

Among survivors are his sons, Edward and wife Marjorie. Lee Roy Holden. His grandchildren, Dette and husband Rodney; Laurie and friend Steve; Chris and wife Wendi; LeeAnn and husband Ron; Isaac and wife Ashley; Randall and wife Connie; Kara and Kaylin. His brother, Detric and wife Joan and his sister Shirley. Special friends Colleen Sconiers and Missy and Dale Burton. His brothers and sisters-in-law Dora, Lucy, Emelia, Gloria, Paul Jr. and Felix. Nine great grandchildren also survive.

Floral arrangements are being accepted. A time of visitation will be Friday, October 14, 2011 from 10 until 11 A.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel with the funeral beginning at 11A.M. with Reverend Owen Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
