Mr. Larry Nelson, age 67 a lifelong resident of DeFuniak Springs passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the family residence early Sunday night. He was born October 8, 1952 in DeFuniak Springs, one of the eight children of Sidney and Gennieve Redmon Nelson. Larry was a long time employee of the Walton County Board of County Commissioners and served as Project Manager for the county. He and his family made their home on Sidney Avenue in DeFuniak which was named after Larry’s father. Seldom, if ever missing a day of work for any reason, beit sickness, inclement weather, Larry was the one you could depend on to show up. He was a member of the Alaqua Hunting Club and hunted and fished the lakes and rivers and streams of Walton County and the surrounding area. Very dry witted, Larry would often say, when asked what his plans for the weekend were, “he was going to kill some fish”. In season, he and his sons would spend hunting season at the lodge, sleeping over night for days on end until the season ended. The lodge is out in the woods where Larry’s father and mother and extended family had lived for many many years before moving to town, so Larry felt a connection to the area. Never having much to say, Larry always listened more than he spoke but was generous, kind and loyal to his family and his friends, always willing to lend a helping hand. Larry is a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. He is predeceased by his parents, his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Jane Meigs and his brothers, Terry and Henry Nelson.
Among survivors are his wife, Martha Meigs Lang Nelson, His sons, Josh, Travis and Kahler; his brothers Clarence, Raymond (Joyce), Wendell and Jerry (Jean) and his sister Gwyn (Truett). His sisters-in-law Susie and Abbie Nelson and the mothers of his children, Terry McGraw (Tom) and Anita Marynowski (Stan) also survive.
Floral arrangements are being accepted or memorials may be made in Larry Nelson’s Mmmory to Alaqua Hunting Lodge, 139 Sidney Avenue, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32433.
