Joel Thomas "Tommy" Mathews

Joel Thomas Mathews, Tommy, passed into glory on July 19, 2024. He was born almost 91 years ago to Joe Achie and Mary Stanley Mathews on July 25, 1933, and he attended school in Georgia. Tommy was a long time member of Caney Creek Baptist Church in DeFuniak Springs. 

Tommy loved deeply and gave freely, and he loved the Lord with all his heart. He will be remembered for the endless kindness and generosity he was always eager to share with those who crossed his path. While Tommy loved everyone, he definitely had some favorites! His most favorite people were Chester Wilkerson, Larry Paul Mathews, and all of his nieces and nephews.

Tommy is survived by brothers Winston R Mathews (Joan) and George Larry Mathews (Charlotte), sisters Alice Marie McRae (Bill) and Mary Louise Eldson (Curtis), sisters-in-law Ruth Mathews and Adice Mathews, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Stanley Mathews and Joel Achie Mathews, and brothers Billy Joe, Charles Bobby, and James Andrew Mathews. 

Everyone who knew him loved him, and few loved him better than the great people in the Chautauqua Nursing Home and Mary and Kim from Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate in Tommy’s memory to the local Gideons or to your favorite charity.
