Retired Master Sergeant Jeffrey Ray Mitchell, age 54 of DeFuniak Springs, FL. passed away on July 24, 2017. He was born on October 16, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Willard Ray Mitchell Jr. and Ruth Anna Riley. After graduation from High School, he joined the United States Air Force, a tour that spanned 23 yrs. Over the course of his military career, he received the Air Force Achievement Medal, Commendation and Meritorious Service Medals, Longevity Service Award, Overseas Ribbon, National Defense Service and many other commendations. He also served tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. He earned an extensive Military Education while also receiving his degree of Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland in 1996. He received a second degree in Computer Science & Management from Angelo State University in 2001. As a Master Sergeant, he served as an Instructor in Electronic Computer and Switching Systems until his retirement from the military in 2001. He volunteered to go back in for two more years after 9/11. Living in Las Vegas, he worked at Creech Air Force Base with Predators. Then, he accepted a position as a contractor for US Army Base in Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar. In 2015, he and his family retired in Florida.
Among survivors are his wife, Edna Escolano (son Michael), and his daughter Sarah Chanmysay (husband Eric, 2 children Nicolas & Valerie) and Sarah’s Mother, Anja Mitchell, his sister Pamela Mitchell Wahr (husband Larry), his brother Steven Mitchell, half sisters, Angie Vorhies and Amy Mitchell, his father Willard Ray Mitchell Jr. (wife Phyllis), 3 nieces and 3 nephews.
Floral arrangements are being accepted (at visitation or home only, since not permitted at the memorial) or donations in his memory to Grace Church. A time of visitation will be on Monday, July 31, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p. m. in Jerry Evans Chapel. Military Honors will be held Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. in Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola Florida with Reverend Bobby Tucker officiating.
