Gordon Leopold died peacefully at his home on September 14, 2016. He was born in Peterborough, Ontario on August 24, 1926 and grew up in Windsor, Ontario. Born to Helena Brett and George Leopold. He became a U.S. citizen in 1952. His place of worship was St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church, where he was an active member for 12 years. Serving as a Quality Control administrator for 33 years he retired from the Fisher Body Division of General Motors in 1983. He developed and taught a class on Statistical Quality Control at Oakland University in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
With his early retirement he began his volunteer career serving as Co-Chair of The Ulster Project in Chattanooga, Tennessee uniting Catholic and Protestant youths from Northern Ireland. Then moving to Florida, he served as Construction Manager for Okaloosa County Habitat for Humanity from 1996-1998. When Opal struck he became a member of the Red Cross National Disaster Team serving as a Family Service Representative and worked with them after 9/11. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Herbert, George, John and Ronald, and two sisters, Helena and Alvina.
He is survived by his loving wife Betty Ann of 41 years and five children; Michael Leopold (Marcia) Northville, MI, Jill Martinez (Robert) Irving, Texas, Jolayne Thompson (Brian) Royal Oak, MI, Julie Leopold Fernandez (Paul) Metamora, MI and Ellen Leopold Beckman (Howard) and five stepchildren; Christine Potvin (Harry) Lake Orion, MI, Cathlin Hummel (Ronald) Clarkston, MI, Carin Aspen (David) Loveland, CO, Gregory Medla (Deborah) Ft. Walton Beach, FL and Cynthia Spring (Rick) Lancaster, OH. Also, he is survived by 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in Gordon Leopold’s memory to The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity or St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, September 24, at 10:00 in St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church, 247 U. S. Highway 331 North, DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
