Mrs. Gennieve Redmon Nelson, Age 88, widow of the late Sidney Nelson passed away late Wednesday afternoon in Healthmark Regional Medical Center surrounded by our family. She was born January 3, 1928, one of four children born to Dave Henry Redmon and Jennie Broxston Redmon. Most will remember “Granny” Nelson in her association with the Walton County School System where she worked in the lunchrooms for some thirty-three years, mostly at the high school. She fed all of her children and most of her grandchildren as they progressed through the school system, back in a day when school lunches tasted good rather than in an age of processed foods mandated by the State. She and her husband had been part of the Pleasant Ridge Community, but later moved into town and build the family home on the street which was named after him. There, Granny made a home for her husband, her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren and more recently a great great grandchild. It was the focal point for holidays, Sunday afternoons, reunions and whatever occasion provided itself just to come over and see Granny. She and her oldest son, Clarence “manned the fort”, raising chickens and selling eggs, a bit of the country they brought from the farm. She was a member and past president of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of VFW , a place where she loved to go and play bingo, so much so that her grandchildren bestowed the name of “Bingo Granny” upon her. Her mind was always active, she loved politics, but mostly on the local level and she kept her mind sharp as a fan of Wheel of Fortune, oftentimes solving the puzzle long before the contestants. She was an active member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church until ill health prevailed. This matriarch of the Nelson Family, which spans generations was the glue that held the family together. Granny buried her husband twenty years and one month before her own death. She also had to bury four of her sons, Cleatus, Henry, Terry and Ricky and two of her siblings, J. D. Redmon and Jean Hada.
Among survivors are her children, Clarence, Raymond and wife Joyce, Wendell and wife Kim, Larry and wife Martha, Jerry and wife Jean and Gwyn and husband Truett. Fourteen grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Her daughters-in-law Susie and Abbie, her sister Ottie, her half brother Louis H. Redmon and wife Sue, her half sisters, Carolyn Owens and husband Durwood and Carrie Lawrence and husband Buddy, her sisters-in-law Oneita Redmon and Marie Rhodes also survive.
