Mrs. Empress Carter Dawson, age 94 went to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at her home in Crestview. She was born December 5, 1918 in Danville, Virginia to the late Robert Oscar Carter and Sallie Waddell Carter. She graduated from Bartlett Yancy High School in May of 1937. She married William McSween Dawson from Niceville, Florida on February 7, 1947. Empress was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard having served her country during World War II. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Dawson was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a caregiver for the elderly and sick for twenty five years in DeFuniak Springs and Crestview, Florida. She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her sisters, Thelma Atwell, Lottie Newell and Lucille Hammond and her brother Clarence Carter. Empress was a member of First United Methodist Church of Crestview.
Among survivors are her sons, William Dawson of Pace and Robert Dawson and wife Angie of Crestview. Her grandchildren, Elizabeth Dawson of Gulfport and Kenneth Dawson of DeFuniak Springs. Her sister, Vera Garribedian of Danville, Virginia also survives.
At Empress’s request there will be no flowers. Memorials may be made in Empress Carter Dawson’s memory to First United Methodist Church of Crestview. Graveside services with United States Coast Guard Military honors will be held Friday, November 29, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in Magnolia Cemetery. Burial will follow in the Dawson Family Plot.
