Mrs. Dorothy E. Cawthon Mitchell grew up in DeFuniak Springs, the oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Cawthon. She married Roy E. Mitchell and lived the early years in Pensacola, FL, where her son, Dale Walker Mitchell, was born. During those years, she was a devoted wife and loving mother, as well as a dedicated college student. She received her college degree and began a successful career as a high school mathematics teacher in the Escambia County School System. Mrs. Mitchell was a favorite among her students as she presented the challenges found in high-level math classes. Upon her retirement, she and her husband returned home to DeFuniak Springs. In November 1986, Mrs. Mitchell joined the First Baptist Church. She greatly enjoyed reading, playing a good game of cards, and spending time with family and friends. Mrs. Mitchell served her family and her community in myriad ways, and she remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life. She is predeceased by her brother, Lewis Frank Cawthon, Jr. and her husband.
Among survivors are her son Dale W. Mitchell of Pensacola. Her sisters Stella Margaret Gatlin, of San Francisco, CA, and Elaine Couch, of Tavares, FL. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorials may be made in Dorothy Cawthon Mitchell's memory to First Christian Academy, c/o First Baptist Church, DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Graveside services will be held Monday, August 20, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in Magnolia Cemetery with Dr. Bobby Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in the Mitchell family plot in Magnolia Cemetery, DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
