Mr. Melvin Spears age 87 of Darlington passed away Friday night, May 23, 2014 in an Opp, Alabama nursing home. He was born January 18, 1927 in Walton County, the son of John William “Bud” Spears and Dovie Ollie Gainey Spears. Melvin worked in Largo, Florida with the State Road Department for fourteen years before being transferred back to DeFuniak Springs where he worked with them until his retirement. He and his late wife Louise, who passed away in September of 2002, helped build the new Darlington Baptist Church, working everyday for fourteen months in its’ construction. Melvin enjoyed his retirement, fishing with his brothers and anyone else interested in wetting a hook. He is predeceased by his wife, Louise, his brothers, Preston and Lofton, his sisters, Beulah, Carrie Bell and Mary Lee and his sister-in-law Mary. He was a member of Darlington Baptist Church.
Among survivors are his brother J. D. “Jake” Spears, his sister-in-law Shirley Spears and his brother-in-law Everette Miller. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Visitation will be Monday, May 26, 2014 from 1 P.M. until 2 P.M. with the funeral beginning at 2 P.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel with Reverend Terry Smith and Reverend Donnel Davidson officiating. Burial will follow in Limestone Cemetery.
