Mr. Charlie B J Newborn, age 89 passed away in the early morning hours of Friday, August 20, 2021 at the family residence. He was born August 27, 1931 in Heflin, Alabama (the Crossroads Community) the son of William Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Morris Newborn. At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict Charlie enlisted in the United States Army and was sent to Korea. While on ambush patrol near Wang Jing-Myon Corporal Newborn out maneuvered an oncoming enemy patrol that came within ten feet of U.S. Forces. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device at the direction of the President of the United States. After his military service and while working for Sullivan Furniture Company in Florala running the DeFuniak Springs delivery route and while in IGA in DeFuniak at the check out register Charlie met the checkout girl, Una Bryan, got up the nerve to ask her out, she accepted, they went out to dinner at the restaurant near IGA and the rest is history. Charlie went into law enforcement and worked in several law enforcement positions including locally, DeFuniak Springs Police Department and OCI in Crestview. In retirement Charlie was able to pursue his love of the great outdoors. He had a love of nature, of plants, of flowers and his and Una’s home reflect that passion in the landscape and in Charlies’ talented woodworking skills which are apparent throughout their home. His was a man who lived a full and varied life; he served his country, he served his commitment to law enforcement, he served his family and he served his creator thru his appreciation of nature.
Among survivors are his wife Una Bryan Newborn; his sons Matt and wife Crystal and Mike and wife Tracy his daughters Debbie Early and husband Greg and Patricia Owuh and husband Onyedika. His sisters, Virtie Walker and Melville Johnson. His grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, Bridget, Maegan, Kaleb, Christerfer, Jason, Kelly, Kim, Brett and Nathan. Eleven great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Floral arrangements are being accepted. A time of visitation will be Monday, August 23, 2021 from 10 until 11 A.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel with the funeral beginning at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend David Amason officiating.
