Mr. Charles W. Lyster, age 78, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in a Pensacola hospital. He was born February 27, 1938 in Leonia, Florida, the son of Leverette Franklin (Buck) Lyster and Ruby Catherine Pagett Lyster. After attending public school he worked helping with the family farming operation. In his early twenties he joined the United States Army when in 1966 he married Cecil Ann, the mother of his children. After retiring from the military where he served two tours of duty in Viet Nam he began working in the trucking industry, driving eighteen wheelers cross country until he retired for the second time. Folks in the Westville/Ponce deLeon area claim he then began a third career as a “sideline coach” for the Ponce deLeon sports teams, hardly ever missing a game. Charles was an avid fan of the Florida Gators and enjoyed sharing his enthusiasm for the rich heritage of that University and its’ sports program. A fact, only close family, friends and neighbors knew about Charles was he was a “shopper”; he loved shopping for and buying groceries. Often times he would stop while on his grocery shopping escapades and call family, friends and neighbors and report the bargains he had found and inquire if they would like for him to pick them up some of the sale commodities. He loved his family and friends and was a friend to all who knew him. He is predeceased by his step daughter, Cindy Lyster and his grandson Matthew Lyster.
Among survivors are his daughters, Vicki Grace and husband Darren, Janet Morse and husband Randall and Amanda Ulam and husband Lee. His stepson, Charlie Henderson and wife Robin.
The mother of his children, Cecil Ann Hancock. His brother Bill Lyster, his sister Frances Jacobs and Mark Strickland. Seven grandchildren, Stephanie Belote and husband Bubba, Holly Morse, Anna Morse, Chandler Grace, Stephanie Ulam, Dakota Murray and Makenna Ulam. One great grandson, Matthew Belote also survives.
Floral arrangements are being accepted. A time of visitation will be Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 10 until 11 A.M. in Leonia Baptist Church, 1124 Gillman Road, Westville, Florida 32464 with the funeral beginning at 11 A.M. in the church with Reverend David Greer and Reverend Donald Ward officiating. Military graveside honors will follow in Leonia Cemetery.
