Charles Woodrow Gillis

January 5, 1941 — December 6, 2015

On Sunday afternoon December 6, 2015 after preparing us as well as possible and saying his farewells, Charlie left us. Charles W Gillis, born January 5, 1941 was an extraordinary man to those who knew him. When you met him once you had a friend forever. He could pick up a conversation from the last one whether online or in person. He was infamous for running at least two computers at once and sometimes three with chats going. Charlie was the electronic wiring master of confusion, or at least for everyone else. We have all been players in some video he has made at one time or another. Packrats came to Charlie for “how-to” instructions. If you ever need anything, go to Charlie. He will have it, somewhere. It may take two days to find it, but he will have it. The term “Favorite Uncle” is most often heard among his numerous dozens of nieces and nephews. He is the only male we know who loves to “shop with the girls.” Over the years, we have all benefited from Charlie’s nurturing skills, especially Margie. He cared for her to the very last second as if she were a queen. Amanda provided that same dear love to him in his last hours. He was the best friend anyone could every want to have. Charlie knew the Lord is in control and we should “let the loose ends drag.” The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Dr. James Howell and Staff and Regency Hospice for their love, care and attention during Charlie’s illness.

Among survivors are his wife, Amanda S. Gillis. His sister, Virginia Burgess, his brothers, Doug, Wendel, Adrian and wife Rachel and Ronald and wife Gail. His brothers-in-law, Jimmy Brannon and wife Jewel, Joe Brannon and wife Leah and Oscar “Junior” Brannon and wife Linda. His sisters-in-law, Ellen Cromer and husband Neal, Rachel Pless and Kathy Roberts and his uncle Columbus Gillis and wife Bobbi also survive.

Floral arrangements are being accepted or memorials may be made in Charlie Gillis’ memory to Calvary Baptist Church, Post Office Box 603, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32435. A time of visitation will be Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 6 until 8 P.M. in Jerry Evans Chapel. Graveside services will be held Friday, December 11, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. in Cluster Springs Cemetery with Chaplain Jeff Carlton and Brother Tim Barrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Gillis Family Plot in Cluster Springs Cemetery.
