Mrs. Cecilia Matos Maddox, widow of the late Haywood Maddox who passed away in 2009, passed away in Cornerstone Hospice Facility in Orlando Health Center Tuesday evening, March 17, 2020. Cecilia was born on the island of Sao Jorge and later moved to the island of Terceira, both in the Azores island chain belonging to Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean. It was near the Lajes Field AFB that she met the love of her life, Haywood. Their marriage in 1959 began a life that would see them move around the world to places like Germany, Okinawa, Maryland, California, Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia and Florida among others, as they raised their growing family. Cecilia loved to travel and even after Haywood’s retirement, they continued to travel and meet people. No matter where she went, she made a lifelong friend and always stayed in touch. Cecilia had an incredible sense of humor and always made people laugh and feel special. Her kindness could not be measured and she could always be counted on to help others.
Among survivors are her children, Bobbie Jones and husband Glendale. John Maddox and wife Ann, Eddie Maddox and wife Dana, Larry Maddox and wife Julia and Woody Maddox, Jr. and wife Mary. Her brother Joao Sousa and wife Elizabeth, her sister Lubelia Regalo and husband Duratino along with fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren also survive.
In leiu of flowers memorials may be made in Cecilia Matos Maddox's memory to Corinth Cemetery Caretaker Fund, c/o Jerry Carroll, 2182 Corinth Road, Westville, Florida 32464. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Corinth Church Cemetery, Westville, Florida, Saturday, March 28, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Richard Dawson officiating. Cecilia will then be laid to rest next to her husband Haywood.
Protocol dictates the tradition of Southern greetings with hugs, kisses and handshakes be suspended and that universal precautions be taken in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Graveside seating will be available but those needing to sit are encourage to bring along their personal outdoor seating.
