Our Lord and Savior called home our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Buzz Geoghagan on October 4, 2012. Born June 16th, 1939 in Mossy Head, Florida to Roy and Zella Geoghagan, he grew up in New Harmony, Florida and attended high school in Paxton, Florida at Paxton High School where he lettered four years in basketball, served as President of the FFA, and graduated with honors in 1957. He then attended Florida State University and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. After graduation, he spent 13 years in private industry working in Harriman, TN, Hileah, FL, and Knoxville, TN before being recruited by the United States Postal Service for an upper level management position in Atlanta, GA. He spent the remainder of his career working for the USPS in various roles in Atlanta, GA, Montgomery, AL, Nashville, TN and finally as Postmaster of Panama City, FL for the final 10 years of his career retiring in 2004 with the honor of having the top performing post office in the entire Southeastern US. He also was very involved and enjoyed his time with Kiwanis of Downtown Panama City. He retired to Cape San Blas, FL where he enjoyed daily walks on the beach, fishing in the bay and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid hunter and spent his free time chasing wild turkey, and whitetail deer through the woods and fields of NW Florida and South Alabama. In fact, in 1988 he was very proud to have taken one of largest deer taken in the State of Alabama and affectionately deemed it the “Honeysuckle Buck”. His biggest legacy, however, is the immeasurable mark he left on his wife, children and grandchildren and his loved ones. Everyone that knew him understood that his complete devotion to family was unparalleled and will have a positive impact in their lives forever.
The Geoghagan Family would like to recognize and thank all of the staff at Crystal Bay Assisted Living and Covenant Hospice for their genuine kindness and support during his last days.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sonja Geoghagan. A devoted husband and friend, he and Sonja were always very involved in their church and they especially enjoyed travelling to Atlanta to visit their son and daughter in Atlanta and every 5 years enjoyed trips to Ireland to attend the international Geoghagan family reunions there. He is also survived by his daughter Crista Lee Hawkins and his son, Randy Geoghagan and his wife Jennifer devoting his life to setting a good example and providing to them a life full of hope, love and happiness. Buzz is also survived by his five grandchildren, Chase Randal Hawkins, Chelsea Marie Hawkins, Zella Addison Geoghagan, Temple Lee Geoghagan, and Blakely Margaret Geoghagan. “PaBuzz”, as he was known to his grandchildren, was always available for trips to the ice cream store, collecting every seashell on Cape San Blas and especially riding a pony “way downtown”. They will always remember his vivacious spirit and he will be missed daily.
Buzz is also survived by his two brothers, Jimmy Hansel and Larry Ken K and their children Dennis Hansel, Timothy Allan, Cynthia Zessin, Jeffrey Allan, and Jamie Corbin.
