Becky Lavern Skipper, age 77 passed away near midnight Friday, April 9, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was born September 6, 1943 in DeFuniak Springs the daughter of James Edward "Pete" Mitchem and Lillian Nelson Mitchem. After graduation from Walton High School (1960) at age 16, she began a 42-year career with Civil Service. In 1999, she retired from U.S. Customs, Orlando, Florida as a Supervisory Customs Inspection Officer. She loved her job and was well-known to be one of the first females to enter this career field. She traveled extensively in her job and was assigned to the United Nation's relief effort during the Serbia War. She was stationed in Sofia, Bulgaria and traveled through the Baltic States and Turkey. Her retirement days consisted of gardening, cooking/baking, taking care of animals, shopping, and spending quality time with her family. She was an exceptionally hard-working and kind person.
Becky faced death from colon cancer with courage and faith and will be missed but not forgotten. She is predeceased in death by her father.
Among survivors are her loving mother, Lillian Nelson Mitchem, her brothers Lonnie and wife Sandra; Tommy (Tuffy) Mitchem, Sr. and wife Donna; and Robert (Tinker) Mitchem along with her special nephew Tommy (Bubba) Mitchem, Jr., his son Connor Mitchem, and her niece Kimberly (Grace) Nelson.
